Hi, I'm Nick
Multidisciplinary Freelance Designer
I’m a freelance designer available for hire under the name nvanbalken. I provide modern, functional, and creative design solutions across digital and print media—ranging from graphic design and web design to technical product development. My work is grounded in clear communication, a strong sense of initiative, and a practical, problem-solving mindset.
Background
Tools & Skills
I graduated in 2017 from the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft, where I was trained to think like a designer in the broadest sense. Through a flexible, solution-oriented design process, I learned to create not only innovative products but also intuitive user experiences, streamlined production processes, and sharp, effective visual communication.
After graduating, I joined Aristides Instruments, a high-end custom guitar manufacturer in Haarlem. There, I merged my passion for music and design in a role that allowed me to work hands-on as a luthier, graphic designer, and technical draftsman. Over three years, I contributed to custom vector designs, optimized production processes, and developed CAD, CAM, and CNC programs.
In 2021, I began working independently as a freelance designer. Since then, I’ve built a diverse portfolio of projects in web design, desktop publishing, graphic design, and technical drafting. My client base includes organizations and businesses who value my practical, modern, and affordable design solutions.
Personal Approach
I’ve always been a maker. I believe learning doesn’t only happen in formal education or the workplace—it also happens in your free time. Whether I’m working on music, activism, design, or tech, my personal projects help me stay curious, adaptable, and versatile. A strong visual identity is relevant everywhere.
Activism
Since 2019, I’ve volunteered with various activist and community organizations such as Bond Precaire Woonvormen, Woonopstand, and Wij Weigeren de Huurverhoging. We campaign for fair, accessible, and healthy housing for all. As part of these initiatives, I’ve contributed both paid and volunteer design work—including content creation, web development, graphic design, and print materials. These projects are also featured in my portfolio and have helped shape me both professionally and personally.
